BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 2
[ARC 2513]
Module Synopsis
The subject aims to introduce structures as architecture by developing an understanding of the structural systems in construction technology in a unique way in relation to historical and innovative buildings. Skeletal, solid and surface construction systems are discussed and analyzed in terms of load and forces in a general term. Projects based on topics covered during lectures provide students with the opportunity to apply knowledge gained as well as to further enhance their understanding of the topics.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Identify basic structural systems in construction.
2. Recognize the implication of construction systems in design.
3. Compare solid, skeletal and surface construction systems.
4. Apply construction systems in design.
5. Differentiate solid, skeletal and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on its structural elements.
6. Analyze the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static
Project 1
Skeletal Construction “A Shelter For One”
Introduction
Experiencing and understanding skeletal construction is important as it is one of the most widely used structures for building support. As a designer we should know how skeletal structure works.
Learning Outcome
Learning outcomes assessed in this project include:
- Apply construction system in design.
- Recognize the implication of construction systems in design.
- Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Reflection
Through this project, I have learn to apply the type of sturcture and how to make sure my sturcure is strong and regit.
Project 2
Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure
Introduction
A building will normally comprise several different types of structural systems, either due to its function or building code requirements. As designers it is very important that you understand when and where each of the different type of structural system is used.Solid and surface construction method is one of the most widely used structures for building support. Solid and surface structure provides the required load bearing resistance and aesthetics required by designers.
Learning Outcome
Learning outcomes assessed in this project include:
- Identifications of basic structural systems in construction
- Compare solid and surface construction systems.
- Differentiate solid and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements.
- Recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design.
- Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.

Reflection
Learned to observe and identify the type of structure the specific building used. And the ways to enhance the structure.
