METHODS OF DOCUMENTATION AND MEASURED DRAWINGS
(ARC1215) / (ARC60305)
Module Synopsis
The subject aims to develop an understanding of the principles of building preservation and the method of recording it in three documentation methods; measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. The ideas of application and management of architectural historic documentation will be presented as part of the overall knowledge of building preservation. For measured drawings, students are to document historically and architecturally significant buildings in the form of as-built drawings. The task requires 10 to 20 students per group that involve field works consisting measuring technique such as photographing, sketches, use of theodolite and measuring tape.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Identify and classify architectural historic structure
2. Recognize and recall architectural historic structure documentation method
3. Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation
4. Explain the application of architectural historic documentation
5. Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation
6. Explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements
7. Describe architectural cultural heritage
8. Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurements
9. Translate measured data into scale drawings
Project 1
Sketchbook and Journal
Introduction
This project is an on-site exercise where students have to sketch and documents the physical and intangible qualities of the buildings as well as the immediate context of the site. It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building. Some of the physical aspects may include building or structure such as a bridge; architectural elements such as windows, doors, five-foot ways; architectural features such as ornaments, keystone, arches over windows, carvings, tiles layout; construction details such as staircase, roof structure; the physical context – overall urban layout, street furniture; traditional transportation such the trishaw. The intangible aspects that can be captured are people of the place doing their daily activities; cultural elements such as clothes, furniture, glass and china, food; traditional trade – incense shop, street side cobbler, other family businesses; urban qualities such as the rhythm created by the repetition of roof volumes, the serial visions and vistas, the circulation nodes.
Learning Outcome
- Identify architectural historic structure
- Capture the tangible and intangible essence that is contained within the architecture realm

Reflection
Through this project, I have learn to to train to be observant to their surrounding. Besides, I have learn to instil the culture of documenting as part of the learning process in architectural education. i had also learn to enhance my graphic communication skills in capturing important details and the spirit of the place. This project trained my sketching and rendering skill.
Project 2
Measured Drawing
Introduction
This project will be carried out throughout the semester where students will be assigned to measure and document a historical / heritage building and translate all the data into a set of drawings and a model. Each group will have to only measure one particular building assigned by the lecturer. Apart from doing the measuring exercise on site, students will also need to do additional research in order to piece together all the important data about the building.
Learning Outcome
- Recommend the appropriate method of architectural historic documentation
- Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation
- Explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements
- Interpret historic architectural element, structure and building
- Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise
- Translate measured data into scaled drawings
- Produce a report on the buildings highlighting its importance and historical significance

Reflection
I have learn to properly measured and doument it up then transfer it into drawings in autocad. Besides, I have learned to measure the building by using different kind of measuring tools and ways to measure the building. Through this assignment, I have learn to go through all those difficulties we face during that measuring week. I have also enhanve my media skills which is autocad. In conclusion, I had learn a lot throughout this assignment.
Project 3
Report & Video on Measured Building
Introduction
The report is a document that accompanies the set of drawings for the building that is measured during the semester. Basically, the report will elaborate on the significance of the building being measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. In this report, students are required to relate the architecture of the building to its significance, highlighting how the two support the inhabitation of the building. A video documenting the building is required to provide 3D experience of the building.
Learning Outcome
- Explain the application of architectural historic documents
- Describe architectural cultural heritage
- Elaborate the relationship between architecture and the significance of the building as well as its inhabitation

Reflection
Report
- We have to find different kind of source to make sure that the information we get is correct. We go interview the neighbourhood nearby and the officers. We also went to the library to get more information related to this building. Although we did not find much information about this building as the history of the building was not really jot down by the people from the pass but we manage to complete the report in the time given.
Video
- The video was recorded according to the information from the report. The video shown the summarise of the report and to highlight the information of this building. Thorugh this assignment, I had improved my video editing skills and the way to documet the information of the building through media.
