Introduction
Community Service is a form of service learning. Service learning is basically using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among students for their community and the world at large. This can be your village, an orphanage, socially disadvantaged individuals or a distant dying species. In the process of your recognizing and taking steps to meet the needs of others, you will enhance your creative, critical and reflective skills. More importantly, this module will help develop your personal and social responsibility. You will learn through participation in a service experience and you will have the opportunity to use your skills and knowledge in reallife situations. You will be exposed to community needs and experience caring for others and learning about the resources available to them for revitalizing their communities. Finally, you will have the opportunity to develop basic knowledge and skills in community service strategies, avenues, and techniques, including the art of volunteerism.
Module Objectives
1) To inculcate a sense of Social Responsibility in students.
2) To promote the culture of caring and respect towards all members of society.
3) To make them responsible citizens of this country.
4) To understand the community around them.
5) To understand themselves in relation to their community
Journals
Workshops
Before we start our project on raising funds for the shelter, we have to first understand whats the problem we are dealing with, therefore we have been arranged to a workshop session where we can have a close up session with the dogs. The workshops have been seperate into two days as we have large number of people and the site cannot fit in all the students in one time. During the first day of the workshop, we have been assigned to get closer with the dog, understand the ways to approach the dogs. Besides, the LASS volunteers also assigned us to move the bricks inside to the dog shelter so that they can create the pavement in the shelter. On the second day of the workshop, we have been assigned to clean up the dog shelter and help to bath the dogs. We experienced the way to approach the dog and bring them to bath. As there is large amount of stray dogs in the shelter, therefore, it takes some time to complete our task.
Fund Raisings
We came up with a few ideas:
1. Selling Badges and Bags around school compound
2. Doing postcards
3. Selling T-Shirts
4. Decide to bring the product out of school compound
After a few discussion with the members, we decide to design and sell bags and badges as part of raising the funds from the profit we earn.
In order to sell the badges, we took photos of our products on posted it on social media to spread the awareness and so that people know what we are doing and get to buy our products. Besides, we also went to the One Utama garden to sell our product with the help of one of LASS volunteer. We also sell our products to our close friends and family members as some of them are dog lovers and intrested in the product we are selling. Through the event, we actually manage to gather quite an amount of donation and profits. All the donation and profits will be added up together and donate to the LASS.
